What are the major strengths and weaknesses of the instructor?
- Strengths are he explains the topics pretty well, has fair programming assignments in terms of difficulty, and gives a good amount of time to complete those assignments. Weaknesses are replying to e-mail quickly, giving valuable feedback on problems students have on programming assignments, and having an entire lecture based on a book powerpoint.
- fast presentation, leads to less thorough understanding
- Strengths is knowledge. Weakness is helping outside of class as well as having homework assignments and quizzes which are way too difficult to complete and useless for exams
- Very fair.
What aspects of this course were most beneficial to you?
- Programming aspect: Learning the various topics in Java, such as all types of trees, a couple new data structures (HashMaps, HashTables), and a few searching algorithms.
- The many new data structures
- Very relevant for all future courses
What suggestions do you have that could help improve the course?
- I suggest that the professor reply to students' email by suggesting a way to complete the problem (as other CS professors do), rather than giving one line responses that don't help at all. I'd also suggest giving more time on the KDTree assignment, as the assignment itself is difficult, and requires more time than usual to code.
- more assignments with simpler goals
- Lessen the difficulty and have less challenging homework
- Good course.
Do you have comments on the grading procedures and exams?
- Give a suggestion as to what the Midterm exam will look like, i.e. the kinds of programming problems that would be on the exam.
- Coding problems in exams shouldn?t be the purpose. Rather it should be about how well you know data structures and how you could implement them. Coding is just saying you memorized so code that does something
Other comments?
- Great class, Learned a lot in the course through the assignments, and office hours are very helpful.
